As well as having initial ideas of our own on what to base or book stories on - the product research showed us more common themes for the age range we are focusing on. Themes including: Princesses, Fairies, Ballerinas, Best friends, Party’s, Holidays, Sleepovers and Ponies are some of the most popular! We brainstormed our favorite ideas, and then selected the theme for our first book …. Tea Party!
Our next step was to develop our main characters. Again, we brainstormed ideas and took inspiration from our product research. We knew we wanted a young girl to be our main character, similar to our customers- who would be the main character in every book we create. She is a good role model, and someone the readers can relate and look up to - being friendly, helpful and happy. We then brainstormed names for her and decided on the name .. Gracie-May!!
We then liked the idea of Gracie-May having a special friend/teddy that would also be featured in every book which is when .. Benji bear .. was created - a beige, fluffy teddy bear that accompanies Gracie-May on all her adventures.
Stay Tuned for development pictures of our main 2 characters ….
To continue the product research stage we looked at who our competitors would be - discussing what their strengths and weaknesses are. Our books are going to be stories that are based around fashion, including personal and social problems with interaction features - that encourage children to get creative! During competitor research we found either purely fashion stories with no illustrations and interaction OR purely interaction books such as instruction craft guides and activity books. We couldn’t find a book that was a mixture of the two - which gives us a good leg to stand on when it comes to bringing something new and different to the market!!
Welcome to our blog ….
J and J Books is a business set up by two fashion enterprise students. The business creates children’s interaction books - with a fashion twist and this blog will document our process!
